Communicating via Refrigerator Magnets

kids-alphabet-fridge-magnets-spelling.jpgIf communication between you and your teen has come to a stand still, try communicating via refrigerator magnets. This is one of those corny, but cute ideas.

We, like many families, had those colorful, alphabet magnet letters for our refrigerator when our children were young. We, like many families, spent more time picking them up from the floor than utilizing them, so they ended up in the trash.

In a unique set of circumstances, we now have alphabet magnets back on our refrigerator. However, instead of a nuisance, they have become a fun, family communication tool.  One morning before work, I decided to send my kids a message… a simple, “I love my kids” spelled out with the magnets on our refrigerator.  It caught on.

We now send weird, quirky little messages back and forth, challenging each other’s creativity in spelling out words with very few letters to use. I have sent messages such as, “Backyard looks nice” when my son mowed the yard and “Tips are good” after my daughter made some good tips at her job as a waitress. I like sending messages that I know I will get a response to, such as “School is great”. They both had something to say about that one.
