New Year’s Resolutions for Kids

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

square-full-new-years-snowflake-small.jpgParents can instill a sense of setting goals and how to reach those goals by helping their children make New Year’s Resolutions. The first step to make this a successful process is to make your own New Year’s Resolution that you know you can accomplish (but, still have to work toward). If the children see you ‘give up’, then that is what they will learn.

Yesterday, we discussed ways that you can accomplish your New Year’s resolutions. These are the same methods that you can teach your children to use for their own goals. Once a goal is reached, a celebration is certainly in store.

Here are some kid-friendly New Year’s Resolutions:

sleepover-party-small.gif• Make bed every day

• Stop biting fingernails

• Eat more vegetables

• Say Yes instead of Yeah (Yes mam & Yes sir are even better!)

• Clean up own dishes after dinner without being asked

There are a multitude of resolutions that your children can set as goals. Keep them age appropriate and realistic. You do not want them to be discouraged. Each year their New Year’s resolution can be a little harder to attain, but should never be unrealistic.

Setting and accomplishing New Year’s resolutions will help your children with smaller goals throughout the year. They will learn what it takes to be successful, and in some cases how to handle failure. Both are excellent lessons they will need throughout their lives!

imagesca9×16q6.jpgWhile New Year’s resolutions are abundant, keeping a New Year’s resolution is another story.

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”

Yesterday we spoke of American statistics on New Year’s resolutions. Today we want to give suggestions on keeping a New Year’s resolution alive. We will use the goal of losing weight as an example, since that it is one of the top resolutions made by Americans each year.

BE REALISTIC
You may want to lose 50 pounds in 3 months, but your New Year’s resolution can be to simply make better choices of foods that you eat.

BE SPECIFIC Write down your resolution and list specific items you will do to reach that goal.

• Cook/Order grilled or baked foods, not fried.

• Eat 3 servings of vegetables/fruit every day.

• Eat a nice size salad before lunch and dinner (hopefully you will eat less of the rest of the meal).

• It is nice to eat less fast foods, but for some people that is not realistic. Therefore, simply make better choices of fast foods.

team.jpgTEAM UP

• Find someone else with a similar resolution and work as a team: someone who wants to lose weight, exercise more, decrease their fried food intake, etc.

girls-at-shower-large.gif• Team up with co-workers on eating healthier lunches whether eating in or out of the office.

monkey-party-small.jpg• Team up as a family on making better food choices and playing at the park more (the kids will love that last one).

A New Year’s resolution is made to be achieved! If you have not thought of a resolution this year*, then find someone who has and be on their team.

With all great accomplishments it is the little things that will get you there. So, make your resolution and set up your alliances early in the year. By focusing on the little things you will accomplish your New Year’s resolution before you know it!

Tomorrow we will discuss helping your children make a New Year’s resolution!
